Help needed in a grave situation

August 27th, 2010

THE hunt is on for relatives of a former Peterborough Co-operative Society chief.

Anglia Co-operative would like to refurbish the grave of William Bavin Parrott, who is buried in Peterborough’s Broadway Cemetery.

Mr Parrott held the posts of manager and then secretary of the Peterborough Equitable Industrial Co-operative Society Ltd for 21 years from 1877. He died in 1899 aged 53.

His eye-catching memorial – featuring a ‘broken’ column which was used to symbolise the death of a family’s main earner – is a focal point of the historic cemetery, but the grave has fallen into disrepair and is also in need of a clean-up.

Anglia Co-operative funeral group manager, Mark Adams, said: “We would really like to speak to surviving relatives of Mr Parrott to get their blessing for our plans to restore what is a really striking memorial.

“It would also be nice to speak to them about the life of William Bavin Parrott, who is a key figure in Anglia Co-operative’s heritage. We have a lot of interesting information about him and members of his family may have more to tell us about him.”

The plans include replacing damaged kerbstones, refixing the memorial column so that it is firmly in place and cleaning and re-silvering lettering at the base of the column.

• If you are related to Mr Parrott, who was born on May 30, 1845, and died on March 12, 1899, and who lived in Cromwell Road, Peterborough, please contact Mr Adams on 01733-225775.

Anglia Co-operative Society interim report now available

The Society has published the interim results for the half year ended 20 February 2010 and John Chillcott is pleased to say that we are still making good progress.

Comparing the figures for the previous year, we are now far better equipped to service our debt, make provision for long term liabilities, maintain our operations and grow the business.

All trading groups improved their contribution levels, whilst central departments managed to reduced their costs, so that's a 'win-win' scenario that demonstrates that Anglia is pulling together toward the vision of maintaining and growing a commercially strong business. This half year result is a positive milestone along the route.

On behalf of the Society John Chillcott would like to thank all colleagues for their endeavors and members and customers for their support .

Colleagues rewarded in Long Service awards

July 2010

AROUND 2,000 years of loyal service was saluted when Anglia Co-operative staff were rewarded for long service at a special event in Peterborough.

Over 90 members of staff with 20-25 years of service gathered at the Cresset to receive certificates and vouchers acknowledging their contribution to the Peterborough-based company.

Chief executive John Chillcott and Harry Whitelock, chairman of the board of directors, greeted each staff member before a celebratory lunch was held.

Mr Chillcott said: “It was a privilege to present the awards. All of the recipients had completed over 20 years service and are recognised as the bedrock of the company.

“Anglia Co-operative directors also attended, reflecting the importance that the board of Anglia Co-operative places on the loyalty and hard work of their colleagues.”
